The CD55 antibody, clone IA10, is derived from the fusion of X63Ag8.653 myeloma cells with spleen cells from BALB/c mice immunized with purified DAF.The CD55 antibody reacts with decay-accelerating factor (DAF), a GPI-anchored single chain glycoprotein of approximately 70 kilodaltons (kDa). It has been suggested that the role of DAF is to protect cells from damage by autologous complement preventing the amplification steps of the complement cascade by interfering with the assembly of the C3 and the C5 convertases. The complement components in the formation of C3 convertases include: C4b2a (classical pathway) and C3bBb (alternative pathway). In the formation of C5 convertases, the complement components include: C4b2a3b (classical pathway) and C3bBb3b (alternative pathway).
