Background
Atlastin-3 (ATL3) is a dynamin-like, integral membrane GTPase that is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane and critical for ER morphogenesis and tubular network biogenesis (1-3). ATL3 also functions as a cargo receptor for ER-phagy and promotes tubular ER degradation by specifically binding to GABARAP subfamily proteins. This ATL3-GABARAP interaction is essential for ATL3 to function in ER-phagy (4). Mutant ATL3 proteins are associated with hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies, illustrating the dependence of long-term sensory neuronal maintenance on the structural organization of the ER (5,6). Zika and coronavirus have been shown to modulate ER-phagy to drive viral replication by hijacking ATL3 and other ER-phagy receptors (7,8).
