Background
Palmitoylation, also known as S-acylation, is a posttranslational modification characterized by the reversible addition of fatty acids onto cysteine residues (1). Palmitoylation is typically carried out by a family of transmembrane enzymes known as zinc finger DHHC domain-containing (ZDHHC) proteins (2). One family member in particular, ZDHHC24, has been shown to palmitoylate mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS), consequently activating the TBK1-IRF3-interferon (IFN) pathway and promoting antiviral immune responses (3).
