Background
Cystatin F, also known as CST7, is an endosomal-lysosomal cysteine protease inhibitor member of the cystatin type 2 superfamily, encoded by the gene (1). It is selectively expressed by hemopoietic cells such as cytotoxic T cells, natural killer cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells, suggesting a role in immune regulation (1,2). CST7 is expressed as an inactive dimer and converted to a functionally active monomer localized to the endo-lysosomal compartment (3). CST7 has been implicated in various cancer types, including breast and cervical cancer, and is thought to play a role in modulating the tumor microenvironment (4,5). Additionally, CST7 is highly upregulated in disease-associated microglia in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, and may play a sex-specific role in neurodegeneration (6,7).
