Description
General description
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. In cells glutathione either exists as reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG). The ratio of glutathione reduced (GSH) to glutathione oxidized (GSSG) determines the cell’s redox status. Healthy resting cells have a GSH/GSSG ratio >100. In cells under oxidative stress, the GSH/GSSG ratio drops to between 1 and 10. Glutathione has also been identified as the thiol buffer that keeps sulfohydryl groups in the reduced form of many proteins. It is produced solely in the cytochrome P450 system and actively pumped to mitochondria. GSH depletion can lead to Neurodegenerative disorders, Pulmonary disease, Immune diseases, Cardiovascular diseases, Chronic age-related diseases, Liver disease, Cystic fibrosis and Aging process itself.
